M94: Other disorders of cartilage

M94.0: Chondrocostal junction syndrome [Tietze]

The sternum is a flat bone at the front of the chest. The ribs and the two collarbones are attached to the sternum. The rib bones are covered by cartilage where they connect to the sternum. The bones in a joint are covered with cartilage. When the joint is moved, the cartilage prevents the bones from rubbing against one another. The cartilage is normally strong and elastic, with a smooth surface.

If the cartilage is changed the affected site may swell up and be painful. If you press on the swollen sites, it may be more painful.
