M87: Osteonecrosis

M87.3: Other secondary osteonecrosis

Other secondary osteonecrosis is a condition where there is death of bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply, with the cause being secondary to another condition. Unlike primary osteonecrosis, the cause of this type is usually a pre-existing disease such as cancer, or certain medication such as corticosteroids. The area commonly affected is around the hip joint, but it can occur in any bone. Symptoms often start as minor joint pains that worsen over time, leading to severe pain and limiting joint use as the disease progresses. If not addressed promptly, it can result in the bone collapsing. Diagnosis is often confirmed by imaging studies, such as X-ray, MRI or bone scans. While not infectious, it is a serious condition that can affect one's quality of life drastically.
