M87.1: Osteonecrosis due to drugs

Osteonecrosis due to drugs is a medical condition in which a portion of the bone starts dying or decaying as a result of the usage of certain medications. The medications that typically cause this illness are usually steroids or other drugs involved in chemotherapy. The condition usually begins with pain or discomfort, notably in one specific area, that progressively worsens over time. This pain could be accompanied by limited range of motion in the nearby joints. Osteonecrosis can affect any bone but is more commonly seen affecting the ends of long bones such as the hip or shoulder. Over time, if left untreated, the affected bone and surrounding cartilage can collapse, leading to severe pain and disability. It's important to note that early detection can greatly slow down the disease's progression and alleviate its symptoms.
