M86.6: Other chronic osteomyelitis
Other chronic osteomyelitis is a long-term infection of the bone, typically caused by bacteria, which can reach the bone through the bloodstream or from nearby tissue. This condition often results from a prior injury, surgery, or a severe infection that damages the bone, making it more susceptible to infection. Symptoms can include persistent pain, swelling, and warmth in the affected area. Some individuals may also experience fever and chills. This infection can create an abscess within the bone which may prohibit the delivery of infection-fighting white blood cells. Moreover, as the infection progresses, it may impair the blood supply to the bone, potentially leading to bone death or fractures. The body's response to this infection often results in an overgrowth of bone around the infected site, which can affect bone shape and function.
