M86.1: Other acute osteomyelitis
Other acute osteomyelitis represents a type of bone infection that usually develops rapidly over a short period of time. This condition usually occurs after an injury or surgery and is caused by various types of bacteria or fungi that enter the bloodstream and reach the bones. It can also happen when an infection from elsewhere in the body spreads to the bone. Common symptoms include severe pain in the area of the infection, swelling, redness, and warmth over the area of the infection, and general discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling. In some cases, patients may also experience fevers or chills. If left untreated, the infection can impair blood circulation leading to the death of bone tissue. This subsequently can lead to the formation of an abscess or a chronic bone infection.
