M84: Disorders of continuity of bone
M84.3: Stress fracture, not elsewhere classified
A stress fracture, not elsewhere classified, or M84.3, is a type of bone injury. This condition typically occurs when muscles are unable to withstand repeated stress, usually in the form of strain or force, and this stress is transferred to the bone, causing a small crack. It is most commonly seen in athletes and military personnel who undergo strenuous physical activities. Symptoms include localised pain which may become worse during physical activity and decreases during rest. One may also experience swelling and tenderness at the specific site of the injury. Stress fractures often progress slowly and overtime, initially, the pain may only occur during exercises but can eventually become constant. The condition primarily affects the weight-bearing bones of the lower leg and foot but can occur in other bones as well.
