M84: Disorders of continuity of bone
M84.0: Malunion of fracture
Malunion of a fracture is a medical condition that occurs when a broken bone heals in an incorrect alignment or position. This typically happens when the fracture was not properly set or if the patient did not follow post-operative care instructions carefully. In some cases, however, malunions can occur in spite of proper fracture treatment. Symptoms of a malunion may include deformity of the bone or joint, persistent pain, limited range of motion, and difficulty using the affected area normally. In severe cases, a malunion can interfere with the function of nearby nerves, blood vessels, or organs. While some malunions may cause little to no discomfort or functional impairment, others may require further medical intervention, including corrective surgery.
