M79.4: Hypertrophy of (infrapatellar) fat pad
Hypertrophy of the infrapatellar fat pad, also known as Hoffa's Syndrome, is a medical condition involving the knee joint. The infrapatellar fat pad, located underneath the kneecap (patella), can experience an enlargement or swelling due to various reasons such as injury, overuse of the joint, inflammation, or certain types of arthritis. This increase in size applies undue pressure to surrounding joint structures, leading to discomfort and sometimes reduced range of motion. Common symptoms include knee pain and swelling, particularly when the knee is fully extended. The pain can be more intense when straightening the knee after a period of flexion, such as standing up after sitting for a prolonged period. The condition often progresses gradually over time, with symptoms becoming increasingly severe if left untreated. Notably, it primarily impacts the musculoskeletal system, specifically the knee joint.
