M73.0: Gonococcal bursitis

Gonococcal bursitis is a specific type of bursitis, which is inflammation of the bursa. The bursa is a small sack of fluid that helps reduce friction between tendons and bones in your body. This condition specifically arises from a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, commonly associated with the sexually transmitted disease, gonorrhea. This bacterium can spread through the bloodstream to other parts of the body and infect the bursa causing inflammation and swelling. Common symptoms include pain, tenderness, and a limited range of motion in the affected area. It may occur near joints such as the elbow, knee, or shoulder. Its onset is often sudden, while disease progression can lead to serious complications if not addressed promptly. It is important to be aware that individuals with gonococcal bursitis may also have underlying gonorrhea infection which must be addressed as well.
