M71: Other bursopathies

M71.1: Other infective bursitis

Other infective bursitis is a medical condition characterized by infection and inflammation of the bursa, a small sac filled with lubricating fluid between tissues such as bone, muscle, tendons, and skin. This infection is typically caused by microbes such as bacteria that have entered the bursa often through a wound or a puncture. Common symptoms include pain, swelling and tenderness in the area of the inflamed bursa, alongside fever and chills if the infection is severe. The infection can potentially spread, progressing to septicemia (infection throughout the body) if not treated promptly. This condition is not transmitted from person to person, rather it's the result of direct microbial invasion into the bursa. It can affect any bursa in the body, but is most commonly seen in bursa located near the joints like shoulder, knee, and elbow.
