M49: Spondylopathies in diseases classified elsewhere

M49.1: Brucella spondylitis

Brucella Spondylitis is a specific type of inflammation that affects the vertebrae, or the bones in your spine, caused by the bacteria Brucella. This condition, typically a result of direct contact with Brucella-infected animal products, can be severe and may develop into chronic back pain, stiffness, and even paralysis if untreated. The disease generally progresses slowly, starting with flu-like symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, and chills, before ultimately leading to severe back pain. Additionally, it may cause other symptoms like night sweats and decreased range of motion. Later stages may feature neurological deficits and vertebral fractures. It primarily affects the musculoskeletal system but can involve other systems, like the nervous and cardiovascular system, as it progresses. The nature of this bacterial infection makes it a significant occupational hazard for those working with livestock and in slaughterhouses.
