M46: Other inflammatory spondylopathies
M46.2: Osteomyelitis of vertebra
Osteomyelitis of vertebra, also known as vertebral osteomyelitis, is an infection that specifically targets the vertebral bones in the spinal column. This infection can be caused by bacteria, typically Staphylococcus, which reach the spine through the bloodstream or from nearby tissue. At times, this condition may be caused by tuberculosis or fungus. Common symptoms may include back pain that is severe and worsens at night or with physical activity, fever, and weight loss. Over time, the infection can lead to an abscess, or pus-filled area, within the spine and cause bone damage or spinal deformities. In severe cases, the infection may press against spinal nerves, leading to neurological problems. Though a serious condition, early identification and treatment can help manage vertebral osteomyelitis effectively.
