M24: Other specific joint derangements
M24.4: Recurrent dislocation and subluxation of joint
Recurrent dislocation and subluxation of a joint is a condition that involves a joint frequently slipping out of its natural position (dislocation) or partially slipping out of place (subluxation). This can occur in any joint of the body but is most common in the shoulder, knee, and hip joints. The condition is typically caused by trauma, weakness in the muscles or ligaments that hold the joint in place, or a structural abnormality in the joint. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, instability of the joint, and sometimes a noticeable deformity. There might also be restricted movement in the affected joint or an audible click or pop during movement. This generates discomfort and can interfere with daily activities and tasks requiring physical effort. Over time, recurrent dislocations and subluxations can lead to long-term joint damage and arthritis, if not adequately managed or treated.
