M23: Internal derangement of knee
M23.6: Other spontaneous disruption of ligament(s) of knee
M23.6, or Other spontaneous disruption of ligament(s) of knee, refers to an injury in which one or more knee ligaments suddenly tear or become severely stretched without any clear cause such as a sports mishap or an accident. Unlike most ligament injuries that result from a forceful impact or twist to the knee, this kind of disruption occurs spontaneously. Patients typically experience immediate pain, swelling, and a pop noise at the time of the injury. Subsequently, it becomes difficult to move the knee or bear weight on it. The afflicted person may also feel instability, as if the knee is giving away. The condition primarily affects musculoskeletal system, specifically the ligaments designed to stabilize the knee joint. It can significantly impair mobility and affects the individual's quality of life if not managed properly.
