M23: Internal derangement of knee
M23.2: Derangement of meniscus due to old tear or injury
Derangement of meniscus due to old tear or injury, also known as M23.2, is a knee condition resulting from previous damage to the meniscus. The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage pad found in the knee joint that acts as a shock absorber between your thigh bone and shinbone. An old tear or injury can interfere with its normal function, leading to instability or abnormal movement in the joint, commonly known as derangement. Symptoms can vary but often include pain, swelling, and stiffness in the knee. Some individuals might feel that their knee is locking or giving way, or they may experience difficulty moving the knee normally. It's also possible to have a sensation of "clicking" inside the knee. Over time, a deranged meniscus may increase the risk of knee osteoarthritis, a condition that causes joint inflammation and pain.
