M17: Gonarthrosis [arthrosis of knee]
Gonarthrosis, also known as arthrosis of the knee, is a type of osteoarthritis that specifically targets the knee joint. This condition is characterized by the progressive wearing down of the cartilage in the knee, which leads to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Typically, it affects older individuals due to the natural ageing process, but can also occur as a result of obesity, injury, or overuse of the knee joint. As such, it's more commonly seen in athletes or occupations that place exceptional demands on the knees. Over time, gonarthrosis can lead to more severe knee dysfunction and even deformity. Importantly, this condition does not spread or transmit between people, and it primarily affects the musculoskeletal system, particularly the lower limbs. Symptoms of gonarthrosis are often most noticeable during physical activity and can progressively get worse, affecting the individual's daily life and physical functioning.
