M10: Gout

M10.4: Other secondary gout

Other secondary gout, classified under ICD-10 code M10.4, is a type of gout that emerges as a consequence of another underlying medical condition or factors such as certain medications. Unlike primary gout that is caused by the body's inherent inability to properly eliminate uric acid, secondary gout is strongly associated with diseases that increase uric acid production or hinder its removal. This accumulates and forms sharp crystals in a joint, leading to intense pain, redness, warmth, and swelling, often in the big toe, ankle, or knee. Progression includes recurrent attacks that, if not addressed, can lead to joint damage and loss of mobility. Kidney conditions, certain blood disorders, and diuretic medications are commonly associated with secondary gout.
