M07: Psoriatic and enteropathic arthropathies
M07.1: Arthritis mutilans
Arthritis mutilans, also known as M07.1, is a severe form of arthritis that can cause significant deformity and disability. This condition primarily targets the small joints of the hands and feet, although it can also affect other areas. It's characterized by an extremely aggressive inflammatory process that destroys the affected joints, which leads to the bones in the joint actually shortening over time, causing the joint to lose its shape and function. This can result in what is often described as a 'telescoping' effect where the fingers or toes appear to be collapsing into themselves. Symptoms of this condition usually include an onset of rapidly progressive and severe joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and a reduced range of motion. As the disease progresses, it can lead to severe deformities and disability due to the loss of joint function.
