M00.0: Staphylococcal arthritis and polyarthritis
Staphylococcal arthritis and polyarthritis is an infection in the joints caused by the Staphylococcus bacterium. This condition can cause severe pain, swelling, and redness in one or more joints, an affliction referred to as polyarthritis when multiple joints are involved. The bacteria usually enters the body through a break in the skin and can travel through the bloodstream to infect the joint. An individual suffering from this type of arthritis may also experience fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of being unwell. Without medical intervention, the infection can progress, leading to potentially severe complications, such as joint damage and, in severe cases, life-threatening conditions such as sepsis. Although anyone can contract staphylococcal arthritis, individuals with weakened immune systems are at increased risk.
