L89: Decubitus ulcer and pressure area
L89.3: Stage IV decubitus ulcer
Stage IV decubitus ulcers, also known as pressure sores or bedsores, are severe, advanced skin injuries that have progressed to the point where there's damage to deeper tissues, muscles, and possibly even bones. These ulcers typically occur when prolonged pressure, often from lying or sitting in one position for too long, cuts off the blood supply to a certain area of skin. This is commonly seen in individuals with limited mobility, such as those confined to a bed or wheelchair. Symptoms of these ulcers include a large, open wound, significant loss of skin, and exposed or directly palpable muscle, tendon, or bone. This stage of ulcer is also likely to develop dead or blackened tissue around the wound. Pain levels may vary, with some patients feeling significant pain while others, due to nerve damage, may feel little to none. Regular repositioning can help prevent the worsening of these ulcers.
