L89: Decubitus ulcer and pressure area
L89.0: Stage I decubitus ulcer and pressure area
Stage I decubitus ulcer, also known as a pressure ulcer or bed sore, is a localized injury to the skin and/or underlying tissue. This generally happens over bony areas due to pressure, or pressure combined with shear and/or friction. In its first stage, the ulcer presents as a non-blanchable redness of intact skin. This means that when you press it, the skin doesn't turn white. It's typically associated with discomfort, including pain, itching, or burning. The tissue in this stage is still soft but may feel warmer or cooler compared to adjacent healthy skin. The decubitus ulcer most commonly affects individuals who are bedridden, use a wheelchair, or are unable to change positions without assistance. It can occur in several areas of the body, but it's most commonly found on the heels, hips, and tailbone.
