L72: Follicular cysts of skin and subcutaneous tissue

L72.2: Steatocystoma multiplex

Every hair is anchored in a small bulb, the hair follicle. This condition causes fairly large cysts filled with solid material to develop around these small hair follicles. The cysts can then be seen or felt as small papules.

The papules are mainly found on the forehead and the upper body.

Changes in the genetic makeup cause this condition. Other family members may also be affected.
