L72: Follicular cysts of skin and subcutaneous tissue
L72.1: Trichilemmal cyst
Every hair is anchored in a small bulb, the hair follicle. This condition causes fairly large cysts filled with solid material to develop around these small hair follicles. The cysts can then be seen or felt as small papules or large nodules of a few centimeters.
The papules or nodules are mainly found on the scalp, on arms and legs and the external genitals.
Changes in the genetic makeup can cause this condition. Other family members may also be affected.
