L60.0: Ingrowing nail
Nails in your hands or feet are affected.
When the side of a nail grows into the skin, the surrounding skin usually gets inflamed. This site then usually turns red and swells up. This is often painful. The inflamed site may also leak fluid or pus.
Ingrown nails are more common on the toes than on the fingers. It happens when wearing shoes that are too tight, or when sweating a lot in your shoes, for example. The sweat can soften the skin around the nail. This favors an ingrown nail. The nails may also have been cut too short at the edges.
