L13.0: Dermatitis herpetiformis
This condition causes small papules to be formed. These papules are itchy and they can also cause burning pain. Small blisters can be found on these papules and these are filled with fluid. Bloody crusts are formed when the affected areas are scratched. The papules are often found in groups. The skin can also be reddened.
The affected areas are mainly the backs of the arms or the front of the legs. The bottom, head or shoulders can also be affected, for example.
This condition makes the immune system react too strongly to the normally harmless substance gluten. This damages the skin and produces skin lesions. Gluten is a protein that occurs in wheat. But gluten also occurs in other types of grain such as spelt and oats.
The condition often occurs together with other illnesses.
