L11: Other acantholytic disorders
Other acantholytic disorders are a group of skin conditions characterized by the breakdown of cells in the outer layer of skin, leading to blisters and sores. These conditions happen when the cells in the outer layer of skin do not stick together as they should, which can be due to genetic reasons, immune system response or certain medications. Symptoms often include fragile skin that blisters easily, particularly on areas of your body that often rub together or rub against clothing. Over time, these blisters can become painful sores. These disorders typically progress slowly, with symptoms worsening over time. If not managed effectively, they can lead to complications like skin infections, dehydration and sepsis because of the open sores. It's important to note that these skin disorders are generally not contagious.
