L00-L08: Infections of the skin and subcutaneous tissue

Infections of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, as identified in the L00-L08 group, are medical conditions characterized by the invasion of harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi in the skin and the layer of tissue just beneath the skin, known as subcutaneous tissue. These infections can occur anywhere on the body and are primarily transmitted through breaks or cuts in the skin, insect bites, or direct contact with an infected person or contaminated objects. Common symptoms can include redness, swelling, pain, and warmth in the affected area, along with potential pus formation or fever. These conditions often progress from mild irritation to more severe inflammation, and in some instances, can spread to other parts of the body if not properly managed. Although they primarily impact the skin and underlying tissues, these infections can also have systemic effects, reaching the bloodstream and affecting other body systems.
