K90: Intestinal malabsorption

K90.1: Tropical sprue

The intestines are made up of the small intestine and the large intestine or colon. Most of the nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. The large intestine (colon) is where water and salt are withdrawn from the stool. The last segment of the large intestine (colon) is the rectum. Stool then leaves the body through the anus.

You have become infected with certain bacteria. These bacteria only occur in the tropics. Because of these bacteria, the small intestine is no longer able to absorb nutrients so well. You may then feel exhausted and lose weight. Your bowel movements may change. For example, you may have diarrhea. You may also have flatulence and abdominal pain. It is also possible that you will have a high temperature.
