K57.0: Diverticular disease of small intestine with perforation and abscess

Diverticular disease of the small intestine with perforation and abscess is a specific condition in which small, bulging pouches (diverticula) develop in your digestive system, specifically in the small intestine. In this manifestation of the disease, these pockets become inflamed or infected and form an abscess, which is a pocket of pus. Complications arise when these abscesses burst or perforate, causing the infection to potentially spread to other parts of the abdomen, leading to a dangerous condition known as peritonitis. Common symptoms may include abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and changes in bowel movements. This condition can rapidly worsen, making early detection critical to prevent further complications. It generally affects the digestive system, but due to the nature of the complications, other body systems can be indirectly influenced.
