K56: Paralytic ileus and intestinal obstruction without hernia

K56.6: Other and unspecified intestinal obstruction

The intestines are made up of the small intestine and the large intestine or colon. Most of the nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. The large intestine (colon) is where water and salt are withdrawn from the stool. The last segment of the large intestine (colon) is the rectum. Stool then leaves the body through the anus.

The intestines are like a tube. There is a hollow space on the inside. The intestinal wall lies around this hollow space. The intestines can be constricted for instance by scars in them. Among other things, scars may develop if the intestines were inflamed for a considerable time.

If the intestines are constricted, you may have problems with your bowel movement. You may also have abdominal pain. It is possible that you will have to vomit. If the intestines are much narrower than usual, they can also become completely obstructed. In that case, you will usually be very sick.
