K40-K46: Hernia

K46: Unspecified abdominal hernia

Abdominal hernias, when unspecified, refer to a group of conditions where an organ or fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue in the abdomen area. They are mainly caused by heavy strain on the abdominal area, whether through lifting heavy objects, constipation, persistent coughing, or due to a congenital weak spot in the abdominal wall. These hernias do not spread from person to person, but certain lifestyle factors, such as obesity, poor nutrition, and smoking, can increase the risk. The common symptoms include a noticeable bulge, pain or discomfort in the affected area, especially while bending over, coughing, or lifting heavy items. Over time, these hernias can cause complications like trapped intestines which could be a medical emergency. They generally affect the digestive system.
