K40-K46: Hernia

K42: Umbilical hernia

Umbilical hernia, grouped under the ICD-10 range K42, is a medical condition characterized by an outward bulging (herniation) of the belly button area due to a weakness or gap in the abdominal muscles. It occurs when part of the intestine or fatty tissue pushes through the abdominal wall near the navel, forming a small pouch that can often be seen or felt. Common in infants, these hernias can also develop in adults, particularly in individuals with obesity, heavy lifting habits, long term coughing, or multiple pregnancies. This condition often presents with symptoms such as bulging or swelling in the navel area, especially when the person coughs or strains. In most infants, the hernia closes on its own by the time they are 1-2 years old. In adults, however, the hernias usually don't go away on their own and can cause complications, especially if the intestine or fat gets trapped and its blood supply is cut off.
