K11.1: Hypertrophy of salivary gland

The salivary glands produce saliva and transport it to the mouth. In all, there are 6 large salivary glands. The two parotid glands are located in front of the left and right ear. The two submandibular glands are located to the left and right at the back of the lower jaw. The two sublingual glands are located to the left and right beneath the tongue.

There are different reasons for enlarged salivary glands. For example, salivary glands can become enlarged due to an unbalanced diet or because of certain medications. You can also have enlarged salivary glands if you have diabetes or hyperthyroidism. Salivary stones can also cause enlarged salivary glands. Salivary stones are small deposits that can block a salivary gland. The salivary glands can then swell up because the saliva is unable to flow through properly.

Enlarged salivary glands may be seen or perceived as a swelling. Enlarged salivary glands may also be painful.
