K10.1: Giant cell granuloma, central
The jaw consists of the upper jaw and lower jaw. The upper jaw bone is located above the mouth and forms the roof of the oral cavity. The lower jaw bone is located below and to the side of the mouth. In the center of the lower jaw is the chin. To the side, the lower jaw bone extends to below the ears. The mandibular joint is located there.
There are different reasons for this benign change. The change may occur in both the upper jaw bone and the lower jaw bone. It can occur in one or more places.
The change involves bone tissue being destroyed. As a result, teeth in the affected areas may loosen or tilt. If the change gets bigger it can be perceived as a swelling.
