K00-K14: Diseases of oral cavity, salivary glands and jaws
K07: Dentofacial anomalies [including malocclusion]
Dentofacial anomalies, including malocclusion, represent a group of conditions associated with abnormalities in the shape and size, and the relationship between the jaws and teeth. Commonly, these anomalies might manifest as teeth that are crooked, crowded, or protruding, or as jaws that may be too large, too small, or misaligned. These irregularities can be caused by factors such as genetics, premature loss of baby teeth, harmful oral habits like thumb sucking, or trauma. Many people with dentofacial anomalies experience difficulty in chewing or speaking, discomfort or pain around the jaw area, and may also feel self-conscious about their appearance. With time without correction, these conditions can progress to severe bite problems, exacerbated wear and tear on the teeth, and speaking difficulties. Both the skeletal and dental systems are affected by these conditions.
