K03: Other diseases of hard tissues of teeth
K03.6: Deposits [accretions] on teeth
Dental plaque and dental scaling are deposits on the teeth. Dental plaque occurs when a layer of food components, bacteria and saliva forms on the teeth. When the plaque hardens and can no longer be cleaned away with the toothbrush, it becomes known as dental scaling. Scaling can occur on both the visible part of the tooth and below the gum. Deposits on the teeth can appear as a sort of green, white or brown.
The appearance of tooth color can change not only due to deposits, but also to discoloration of the surfaces of the teeth themselves. Discolorations occur due to color pigments that attach to the teeth or in deposits. Certain foods or medicines can be responsible for this. Deposits and teeth can also be discolored by smoking.
