K00: Disorders of tooth development and eruption
K00.5: Hereditary disturbances in tooth structure, not elsewhere classified
Every tooth consists of 3 sections: the crown, the tooth neck (cervix) and the tooth root. The crown is the visible part of the tooth. The tooth neck is covered by the gums. The tooth root keeps the tooth in the jawbone. The outside of a tooth is protected by hard layers. The hard outer layers of the tooth's crown include the enamel and the dentin. The dentin extends to the root of the tooth.
We refer to a genetic change in tooth composition when changed genetic information is the cause. Genetic information is received from the parents. Changed genetic information causes the teeth to develop abnormally. This can affect both the enamel and the dentin. The crown, neck or root can be affected as a result.
Due to the changed tooth composition, the appearance of the teeth is abnormal. The color or shape of the teeth may have changed. The size of the teeth may also be abnormal. When the composition of the enamel or dentin differs, the teeth may be more brittle or more likely to get worn down. The teeth may also have only very short roots or no roots at all.
