J98: Other respiratory disorders
J98.1: Pulmonary collapse
Pulmonary collapse, also known as atelectasis, is a condition where a part or the entire lung collapses, not allowing air to fill the lung fully. This can occur for several reasons, such as a blockage in the airways due to mucus, foreign bodies, or tumors, or pressure on the lung from fluid or air buildup in the chest cavity. The common symptoms include difficulty breathing, coughing, and chest pain, which can range from mild to severe based on the extent of the collapse. Over time, pulmonary collapse may lead to infections like pneumonia. Both spikes the risk in individuals with pre-existing lung diseases. This condition primarily affects the respiratory system, interfering with normal breathing and oxygenation of the blood.
