J95-J99: Other diseases of the respiratory system
J96: Respiratory failure, not elsewhere classified
Respiratory failure, not elsewhere classified, refers to a group of conditions in which the respiratory system fails in one or both of its gas exchange functions: oxygenation and removal of carbon dioxide. It typically occurs when your lungs can't release oxygen into your blood or remove carbon dioxide from your blood. Both conditions can happen at the same time. Common symptoms can include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, and a blue coloration of the skin or lips (cyanosis), indicating low oxygen levels in the blood. These symptoms may increase in severity as the disease progresses. Various conditions, such as lung diseases, muscle dysfunction, or nerve damage, can lead to respiratory failure. This group of conditions affects the respiratory system predominantly and can result in the impairment of other bodily systems due to oxygen deprivation.
