J70.0: Acute pulmonary manifestations due to radiation

The lungs are on the left and right side of the ribcage. They are also connected to the nose and mouth via the bronchial tubes and windpipe (trachea).

You need lungs to breath. When we breathe in, oxygen enters the lungs and accumulates in the blood. This blood then flows to the heart. The heart then pumps the oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. All of the organs are supplied with oxygen as a result.

Nuclear radiation damages the genetic material in our cells. As a result, the cells may change or be damaged. If you are exposed to a lot of radiation in a short time, you may quickly get symptoms. It is also possible that you will only get symptoms late.

Nuclear radiation is used for instance in cancer treatment.

You were exposed to nuclear radiation. The cells in your lungs were damaged in this way. Your lungs have thus become inflamed. Typical symptoms for an inflammation of the lungs are shortness of breath, coughing and a high temperature.
