J67: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to organic dust
J67.1: Bagassosis
Bagassosis is a respiratory condition triggered by continuous inhalation of dust from bagasse, a by-product of sugarcane after it has been processed for juice extraction. The microscopic particles of bagasse dust can become lodged in the lung tissues when continuously inhaled over time, causing inflammation and scarring, and leading to respiratory symptoms. Common symptoms typically include breathlessness, coughing, and occasional fever. Bagassosis and similar diseases are categorized as pneumoconiosis, which are occupational lung disorders induced by the inhalation of certain types of dust. It can take a few years of prolonged exposure for the symptoms to become noticeable, and if left unchecked, the disease could potentially lead to progressive damage to the lung tissues and significantly reduce lung capacity.
