J30-J39: Other diseases of upper respiratory tract
J32: Chronic sinusitis
Chronic sinusitis falls under a group of conditions that involve ongoing inflammation of the sinuses, which are air-filled spaces located within the bones around your nose. This condition typically lasts longer than 12 weeks, despite attempts to treat it. Common causes include infections, allergies, or nasal polyps – small growths in the nasal passages which can block the sinus passages. General symptoms often include fatigue, headache, facial pain or pressure, nasal stuffiness, and loss of smell. This condition may lead to a post-nasal drip, in which excess mucus drips down the back of your throat. Chronic sinusitis affects the respiratory system and if left untreated, it can progress and potentially lead to complications such as meningitis, a brain abscess, or a bone infection.
