J12: Viral pneumonia, not elsewhere classified
J12.3: Human metapneumovirus pneumonia
Human metapneumovirus pneumonia is an infectious disease caused by the human metapneumovirus (hMPV). This condition primarily affects the respiratory system, and is known to be a common cause of respiratory tract infections. The virus gets transmitted from person to person through direct contact with respiratory secretions, such as from coughing or sneezing. People with this condition usually present symptoms ranging from fever, cough, shortness of breath to more severe respiratory distress. It is important to note that the disease may progress more rapidly or be more severe in people with weakened immune systems, elderly individuals, and young children. The respiratory distress is caused by the inflammation and infection of the lungs, and in some severe cases, it may lead to complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
