J09-J18: Influenza and pneumonia
J09: Influenza due to identified zoonotic or pandemic influenza virus
Influenza due to identified zoonotic or pandemic influenza viruses represents a group of flu conditions stemming from a particular category of influenza viruses. These viruses are generally animal-derived (zoonotic) or a result of a new subtype causing a global outbreak (pandemic). The transmission typically happens via respiratory droplets spread by sneezes or coughs from an infected person. Common symptoms with these types of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, and sometimes, diarrhoea and vomiting. The progression of the disease generally depends on the state of the affected person’s immunity, from mild symptoms to severe complications such as pneumonia, multi-organ failure, or death in extreme cases. This specific category of influenza affects primarily the respiratory system but can impact other organs and systems in severe cases.
