I80: Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis
I80.8: Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis of other sites
Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis of other sites refer to an inflammation of a vein (phlebitis) that can become complicated by a clot formation (thrombosis) in the blood vessel, known as thrombophlebitis. The inflammation and clot can occur in veins located in any part of the body with the exception of the deep veins in the legs, which is a separate condition. The causes of phlebitis and thrombophlebitis might include trauma to the vein, prolonged immobility, or conditions that increase blood clotting. Presentation of this condition typically includes pain, swelling, redness or warmth on the skin overlying the involved vein. If the condition is not treated, the clot might grow large enough to obstruct the vein or dislodge, potentially causing serious complications. This disorder affects the circulatory system, causing potential disruption in blood flow.
