I23.5: Rupture of papillary muscle as current complication following acute myocardial infarction

A heart attack involves parts of the heart not getting enough oxygen-rich blood. As a result, the affected heart tissue gets damaged or dies.

Various problems can occur after a heart attack.

There are 4 valves in the heart. These valves control the flow of blood in the heart. Two valves are attached to the inner wall of the heart by certain muscles. Your heart attack has made these muscles tear. When these valve muscles are damaged, the valve can leak.

The heart may no longer be able to pump the blood through the body so well. They may also lose consciousness as a result.
