H90-H95: Other disorders of ear
H92: Otalgia and effusion of ear
Otalgia and effusion of the ear refers to two conditions in the ear that can cause discomfort and pressure. Otalgia is the formal term for pain in the ear, which can range from mild discomfort to severe, sharp pain. It can result from infections, injuries, or blocked Eustachian tubes, which connect the middle ear to the throat and nose. Effusion of the ear, often termed as 'glue ear', involves the buildup of fluid behind the eardrum in the middle ear. This condition can make hearing difficult and cause a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear. It is commonly seen in children and can result from colds or allergies that cause inflammation and blockage of the Eustachian tubes. Neither Otalgia nor ear effusion is contagious, but both can significantly impact a person's comfort and ability to hear.
