One reason for an inflammation of this bone might be another inflammation of your ear. The inflammation in this bone can cause sudden severe ear pain. One may suddenly feel very sick and get a high temperature. Your hearing may also be worse. The ear may stick out on the affected side. You can then feel a swelling behind the ear on the affected side.
