H61: Other disorders of external ear
H61.0: Perichondritis of external ear
The ear consists of 3 sections: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The auricle and the auditory canal are part of the outer ear. The auricle and auditory canal route sound from outside towards the middle ear. Inside the auricle is cartilage. The cartilage gives the auricle its shape.
In your case, the cartilage or the tissue around the cartilage is inflamed. This type of inflammation is often caused by a pathogen. The ear may be swollen and sore as a result. Small swellings may also have formed at the edge of the auricle concerned.
