H50.5: Heterophoria

Normally, when you look straight ahead, both eyes look straight ahead. Squinting alters the position of one or both eyes. For example, the affected eye can point more to the side or upwards or downwards. You can have a squint from birth. However, it can also be the result of other conditions.

You only squint in certain situations. These triggering situations can be drinking alcohol, tiredness, stress or emotional distress. This form of squinting does not usually produce any symptoms. However, in some cases, symptoms such as headache, eyestrain, getting easily tired or double vision may occur.
